Kim Joo-young recognized for developing LPU architecture addressing GPU cost and power issues in AI infrastructure
CEO Kim Joo-young of AI semiconductor startup HyperAccel received the Industrial Service Medal at the 2026 Information and Communications Day Merit Award hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT for his contributions to technological innovation in LLM inference-specialized semiconductors.

Professor Kim, a KAIST professor and former Microsoft data center accelerator designer, has been developing a proprietary architecture since founding the company in 2023 to address the high cost and high power consumption issues of GPU-centric AI infrastructure. This award recognized his work in overcoming the limitations of existing GPU-centric AI infrastructure and proposing a semiconductor architecture optimized for LLM inference.
Professor Kim, a KAIST professor and system architecture expert, founded HyperAccel in 2023 based on his experience leading data center accelerator design at Microsoft. Since then, he has presented a next-generation AI infrastructure structure by developing the LPU (LLM Processing Unit), an AI semiconductor specialized for LLM inference.
HyperAccel’s LPU is based on a Streamlined Dataflow architecture that fundamentally redesigns the computational and memory access patterns of the LLM inference process. This maximizes memory bandwidth utilization and reduces data center power consumption and total cost of ownership (TCO) simultaneously by utilizing LPDDR5X low-power memory.
HyperAccel has completed the development of an ASIC applying Samsung Foundry’s 4nm process, aiming to improve power efficiency by approximately 3 times and cost efficiency by over 10 times compared to GPUs.
This award comprehensively recognized contributions including technological self-reliance through innovative AI semiconductor development, implementation of high-efficiency AI servers, fostering the AI semiconductor ecosystem, spreading demand-linked R&D, and cultivating high-level talent in semiconductor design and system software.
Academically, the company has proven its capabilities through consecutive achievements at global conferences and technology competitions, including the ACM/IEEE DAC 2023 Best Presentation Award, IEEE MICRO 2024 Best Paper Award, IC Taiwan Grand Challenge 2025 Winner, and U.S. Extreme Tech Challenge 2025 Finalist.
CEO Kim Joo-young stated, “This award is not only a recognition of HyperAccel’s technological capabilities but also of the growth potential of the domestic AI semiconductor industry. We will strive to present a new standard optimized for LLM inference beyond the existing GPU-centric structure and ensure that Korean technology spreads globally.”
